Science and technology are essential drivers of development. They enable societies to better understand challenges, innovate, increase productivity, use resources more efficiently and create new economic opportunities. For Madagascar, this is particularly important in a context of high poverty, low productivity and strong exposure to climate risks. The World Bank estimates that labor productivity in Madagascar is about three times lower than the Sub-Saharan African average, highlighting the need for greater innovation and technological transformation.

Madagascar also invests relatively little in research and development: according to UNESCO data, expenditure on R&D was around 0.19% of GDP in 2018.

Farming & Technology for Africa seeks to help bridge the gap between science, innovation and the real needs of society. It promotes applied research, experimentation, knowledge transfer, appropriate technologies, training and entrepreneurship.

The challenge is not simply to generate knowledge, but to turn knowledge into accessible, practical, affordable and scalable solutions. FTA recognizes the complexity of this challenge and aims to build stronger bridges between researchers, students, entrepreneurs, farmers, institutions and technology developers.
