FM3A – Fiarahamonina Maintso manana Amby Ampy sy Afaka is a rural development programme led by Farming & Technology for Africa (FTA) with financial support from Aqua Alimenta. More than an agricultural project, FM3A takes an integrated approach to improving the long-term quality of life of rural and peri-urban communities in Madagascar.

The project addresses several dimensions simultaneously: food security, income improvement, environmental protection, capacity building, and quality management. Its approach is based on community participation, localized decision-making, and the progressive development of local autonomy.

Activities include the promotion of agroecology, seed production and distribution, composting and biofertilizers, irrigation, livestock, agroforestry, reforestation, agricultural processing and marketing. The project also supports savings and collective investment through the TA.FI.TA system, as well as rural entrepreneurship.

A strong emphasis is placed on developing local skills and leadership. The Centre de Formation Professionnel au Développement & à la Résilience (CFPDR) trains practical rural technicians who can support their own communities. This approach aims to reduce dependence on external expertise and strengthen the long-term sustainability of local initiatives.

The current phase builds on the achievements and lessons of the first phase, 2022–2024, and focuses on expanding and consolidating the approach. Key areas of progress and monitoring include increased agricultural production, new economic activities, participant savings, adoption of agroecological practices, and tree planting.

🌾 An approach built around self-reliance

FM3A does not view communities simply as beneficiaries. They are increasingly considered participants, collaborators, and partners. The objective is to progressively strengthen their ability to make decisions, manage resources, develop economic activities, and create solutions adapted to their own territories.

Through this approach, FM3A aims to contribute to communities that are better nourished, more economically self-reliant, able to protect their environment, and capable of sharing their knowledge, helping build a more resilient and sustainable rural future in Madagascar.
