Ecovillage Mahavariana
Talatavolonondry, Analamanga
Ecovillage Mahavariana is an initiative promoting a more sustainable, self-reliant, and resilient approach to rural development, based on practical learning, experimentation, and knowledge sharing.
Located only 27 km from Antananarivo, Mahavariana provides a space where farmers, students, professionals, organizations, entrepreneurs, visitors, and other interested people can discover and practically experiment with different approaches to sustainable development. The site offers training sessions, workshops, practical activities, and participatory work throughout the year.
The initiative brings together a wide range of complementary areas, including permaculture and agroecology, forestry and agroforestry, water management, livestock, vermiculture and fish farming, soils and clay, small-scale tools and rural irrigation, landscaping, ecological construction and eco-housing, renewable energy, as well as personal and community development.
Mahavariana also focuses on training and incubation for agricultural entrepreneurs, encouraging practical learning, initiative, and greater economic self-reliance. Research, innovation, and digitalization are also part of the initiative, helping connect new knowledge and technologies with the realities of rural Madagascar.
The Ecovillage is therefore designed as a place for demonstration and learning by doing. Visitors and participants can observe practical solutions, understand how they work, take part in their implementation, and explore how they could be adapted to their own contexts.
