Environment

Madagascar’s natural environment is one of its greatest assets and a fundamental foundation of human well-being and economic development. Agriculture, water resources, fisheries, energy, tourism and public health all depend directly or indirectly on healthy ecosystems.

Yet the country faces major challenges, including deforestation, land degradation, biodiversity loss, climate change, droughts, floods and cyclones. During the past two decades, Madagascar has experienced 35 cyclones, 8 floods and 5 severe droughts. According to the World Bank, climate change could push an additional 1.68 million people into poverty by 2050, while a business-as-usual scenario could reduce GDP by 5.8%.

FTA aims to contribute to a large-scale environmental transition through agroecology, sustainable land and water management, ecosystem restoration, environmental research and innovation, monitoring technologies, education and community awareness.

The challenge cannot be solved by one organization alone. It requires a massive collective movement and stronger synergies among farmers, communities, researchers, businesses, institutions, young people and citizens.

FTA is aware of the scale of this challenge. Its ambition is to contribute to this movement by helping build a generation that understands environmental interdependence and is ready to act.
